I've recently completed an exhibition of my work in Worthing's Gallery 26 with the theme of female cultural depictions.

Revolution, Religion, Resuscitation

The theme of this exhibit is showing female allegory and personification in culture, society and historical context. The show is an interpretation in the form of three images that visualise the symbolic parts that the female image has played in our understanding of relating to specific areas.

Marianne, Maria, Annie explores how the feminine character shows relation to the signs of visualising an issue in poetic, artistic, spiritual and associative fashions. Three of those themes expressed in this instance are in revolutionary and nationalistic figures, religious icons and in first aid training.

This project is my own vision of characters derived from and inspired by Marianne (the state symbol of France and symbol of liberty, justice and reason), Mary the mother of God and maternal figure and finally of Resusci Annie, the likeness of a casualty used for helping to administer CPR.

Ambiguity represented by the use of their faces being obscured in some way is how I wish to show these women as part of universal female identification.

New Ideas

So with my Fabrica work now finished I have alot more time to set out new ideas for pieces and for work to submit to Gallery 26 once again. The animal pieces have proven popular so I am setting out doing some new work involving the symbolism behind animals and how they mean to humans relationship with them from the spritual, mythological and political. I also found an old picture I took of the cliffs at Durdle Door in Dorset and feel its time to use this some how. More will be posted when these ideas are finished.

Photographic Oportunities With Fabrica

As part of my work with Fabrica I was able to take opportunites to do photographic work with them in documenting some of their in house resident talks and artists lectures. In the two months that I worked there I was able to take part in documenting a talk by artist Jonathan Swain and his talk on Brightons 24 hour economy as part of his White Night project and as well as that I attended a very insightful talk by artist, and exhibitor of the Brighton Photo Biennial Lindsay Seers.

I am interested in Seers' avante garde approach to photography in the ways that she essentially uses her own body as a camera in methods like using the inside of her mouth as a makeshift pin hole camera. Here is a talk about some of her work as part of Channel 4's '3 Minute Wonder' series.

Gallery 26 Exhibition and Formal Launch Evening

I recently had the good fortune to come across an article in Brighton magazine XYZ (http://www.xyzmagazine.co.uk/blog/wordpress/) and its other publication for my home town of Worthing (http://www.xyzmagazine.co.uk/worthing/) which was advertising for a new up and coming gallery calling for local artists.

The space is called Gallery 26 and operates as a gallery, workshop, studio space and graphic novel trader based in the Worthing area, offering a chance for local and non established to get their work shown to a bigger audience.

I've felt that Worthing has needed a place like this for a long time and I was only too happy to talk things over with the founder Mark Guthrie about work and ideas. We had the formal opening of the gallery on November 27th and it couldnt have gone better, drawing in many of the local community and press.

The space shows a mixture of talent showing lots of different ideas and styles including painting, photography, illustration, street art and grafitti, sculpture and design. Other artists involved include the Skeleton Cru, which is a collective specialisng in spray paint and grafitti artwork and sculpture and David McAdam Freud, an artist from the Freud dynasty and son of Lucian Freud himself.

Praise for the show has been excellent and I have got a new interest in wanting to be a key player and submitting as much as I can to the show. Sales have been good with lots of work being brought by visitors and work of mine has sold too, including the bear and lion head I've created before. These two images are especially popular with the general public.

Response Magazine

A collaborative magazine amongst the Fabrica volunteers runs with every show and it is called Response Magazine. For this show we were invited to submit images of our work for the magazine to go along with the theme of collecting to match the nature of The House Of The Vernacular. Here is my contribution and interpretation of this theme that I submitted.

The House Of The Vernacular

The first show that I have become a part of whilst working with Fabrica is the current 'House Of The Vernacular'. This exhibit is part of the Brighton Photo Biennial and runs from October 2nd until November 28th.

The exhibition is curated by Martin Parr and is a collection of photographs from around the world, mainly set in the Cold War period. The photos range from amateur to professional but are strictly not in the vain of being portrayed for art but for a specific purpose in industry or doccumentation.

The seven rooms of the 'house' include a room of black and white Brazilian photos that have been painted over in colour in a method of making family portraits look more luxurious in the days before Photoshop as well as a room slides showing West German economy and industrial stability just after World War Two.

Along side this we have photos of litter bins from around the world (1950s - 60s), journalistic images of the interiors of dictators private planes, American family photographs from the Museum Of Modern conflict and street photos of men in hats from Bogota, Colombia.

Not to mention a room full of awkward looking babies.

Since leaving university I have taken up a volunteer position working at a Brighton art gallery called Fabrica http://fabrica.org.uk/. I see this as a great opportunity to learn some more skills in the world of invigilating and helping out with exhibitions and shows.

I was interested in the gallery because of its diverse history as a former church built in the early eighteen hundreds and because of its wide array of artists from different fields, which it has had within its walls in just over a decade of existence as an art gallery.

Previous shows include work by Brian Eno, Alfredo Jaar, Allison Lapper and currently Martin Parr.

Free Range CHINE Show - July

These are a few photos of our final year exhibition in London amongst the Photography, Fine Art and Illustration courses from the AUCB. Our three courses were part of the Free Range show that took place in the Old Truman Brewery art gallery. Along side us were about five other universities and their own final year students showing their work and talent.

I spent about four days commuting back and forth to Brick Lane and got a really positive vibe from the community and artistic scene that was there. The AUCB exhbition space couldnt have been better in terms of size and atmosphere.

So here is a few pictures of what the different graduates had on offer. For my work I decided to show two large prints of the positive and negative viewpoints on places, suspended high off the walls to create a sense that people would look up and out of a voyeuristic window.

About a week before our graduation and about a fortnight before Free Range we had our end of year show and chance to show our pieces from our Final Major Projects to members of the university, public, family and friends. This was the end of what we had made of 3 years at the AUCB. The photos on the windows were pictures taken of the backs of peoples heads to represent the idea that from the outside your looking in on people looking at the work while not showing the work itself and keeping it about the character of the viewer drawing more viewers in.

Here is a few ideas for the logo which reinterpreted her original rose idea with brand new text. This really isnt my usual way of doing the work that I do but I was pleased with the results and happy to help out.

AUCB Free Range Silent Auction - April 2010

As my final year began to draw to an end we all began planning how we were going to continue raising the £4000+ we needed to finance our degree show in London as part of the Free Range exhibition. So cue another silent auction, this time in collaboration with BA Photography. I submitted this 'Great Bear of Solitude' for the show and received admiration from three of the photography lecturers and £40 towards the £600+ we made in total. So not bad.

The piece is a symbol of solitary strength represented by the bear and its lonesome way of life.

The other area of solitude I chose to explore featured the way people choose isolation as a personal choice to be at one with a higher prescence and to gain a higher form of spirituality. I looked at the ancient order of Hermits and Anchorites for this unit and this is where my interest in religious iconography and surreal spin on worship began to take hold.

As part of my Negotiated Practice unit for my final year at university I decided to look at and represent the idea of how solitude, isolation and alienation affects people in different ways. As usual I looked at signs and signifiers in contextual theory to represent my surreal photographic visualisations in a symbolic form of solitude. My first investigation lead me to look at colour and mind relates to notions of how people shut themselves off from the world and bar themselves from interaction in their own personal prisons.

I took part in another student run exhibition and this time a silent auction organised by Holly Jones from BA Illutration. The objective this time round was to show our work on a larger scale with more contributors and to help raise money for our courses end of year degree show as part of the Free Range exhibition in Brick Lane, London. I submitted this piece I created from a photogram I did on Foundation way back in 2007. Some chap brought it for £1 yeah! Every little helps.

We Do Art - November 2009

Setting up

I decided to submit the lion piece as part of a student organised exhibition amongst members of BA Illustration. The show was called 'We Do Art' and was orchastrated by a miss Sara Perry at the Bufallo bar in Bournemouth and frequent drinking establishment of students from the uni and arts college.

This was my first experience (though low key) of helping to put on and run an exhibition and even though it was small fish at this stage it felt great to be a part of this and see the different reactions to peoples work. I recieved good feedback for my piece and it felt like a good chance to show work to a bigger audience.

Dream Convergence - Second Year Work

Video for my animation relating to the theme of dreams being a convergence of thought sequences and underlying theme. I used a Game Boy camera to make a stop motion animation of individual still Game Boy photos. The use of the camera and its grainy effects are my way of representing how memory is skewed and reality altered in our own dreams. A persons characteristics can be blurred to show more of a memory vision of ambiguity than a persons physical appearance and the use of the distorting of scenery with these grainy low fi photos symbolises this. The music is an excerpt from a song called 'Splatterstrum' by the group called Tonesucker.

Afew stills from an animation involving the random thought sequences we experience in dreams. Some of the individual sequences symbolise common themes we dream about. The pictures for the stop motion animation were taken using a Gameboy Camera.

Phobia Warning Signs - Second Year Work

A series of 'Phobia Warning Signs' I created as part of a response to a Visual Representation project I was set for my Second year of BA Illustration. The idea was to create a visualisation of a point without using text so I decided to explore themes I'd been looking at before to do with peoples fears, perceptions and psyches.

I decided to look at the idea of different phobias that people suffer from but to satirically represent them as the form of a hazard warning sign to show each phobia. The fact that warning signs are designed to be understood universally applied to this surreal take on caution. I also created 'real life' examples of when these warning signs would need to be utilised in situation.
